2024/2027 – Co-bien, Interreg POCTEFA
Co-bien is an Interreg POCTEFA project coordinated by Icam Toulouse, that addresses social isolation among older adults in the cross-border territories of France and Spain. The project investigates how connected furniture and ambient technologies can support social interaction without imposing conventional digital interfaces on users. It brings together academic institutions, healthcare and social-care organizations, local stakeholders, and technology partners (https://www.co-bien.eu)
Co-Bien develops three complementary approaches: a social connection indicator (ICSO) to characterize situations of social isolation and connection; a technological platform incorporating connected furniture to support communication and social interaction; and intergenerational initiatives designed to strengthen relationships between older and younger people.
The project follows a user-centered and co-design methodology, involving about 200 stakeholders iteratively throughout the design, development, and evaluation process.
2026 – ELIHRM, Défi Clé Robotique Centrée sur l’Humain
The ELIHRM (Évaluation Longitudinale d’Interactions Humain-Robot Multimodales) project extends this research toward longitudinal and ecologically valid human–robot interaction.
Many HRI studies rely on short laboratory experiments, which may be affected by novelty effects and may not capture how users’ perceptions and behaviors evolve over time. ELIHRM therefore investigates repeated interactions with an autonomous robotic system deployed for several weeks in a shared professional environment.
The experimental scenario involves a robotic system assisting with coffee preparation and associated supply-management tasks in a staff break room. Conducted in collaboration with the CLLE cognitive ergonomics laboratory, the project examines how robot characteristics and interaction modalities influence user behavior and perception over time, with particular attention to system transparency, situation awareness, cognitive workload, and calibrated trust.
2025 – HR-Interaction Pro, Défi Clé Robotique Centrée sur l’Humain
The HR-Interaction Pro project investigated the introduction of accessible collaborative robots into small professional environments. A case study conducted with an artisan chocolatier examined how a compact six-axis cobot, the Niryo Ned3 Pro, could assist workers in chocolate packaging tasks.
Beyond technical feasibility, the project investigated how workers perceive and appropriate collaborative robotic technologies when these systems are introduced into existing work practices. The study highlighted the importance of considering usability, acceptance, task organization, and worker expectations from the earliest stages of robotic system design.
2025 – ARCHIPEL, Défi Clé Robotique Centrée sur l’Humain
The ARCHIPEL project was developed to help the general public understand key concepts at the intersection of robotics and artificial intelligence through playful, hands-on, and accessible activities designed in collaboration with ANITI researchers.
The project is structured around three thematic “islands.” The Robotics Island, developed with LAAS-CNRS, introduces the distinction between robots and AI and explores supervised and reinforcement learning through classification games, simplified neural networks, simulations, and a real Furuta pendulum. The Language Island, developed with Linagora, explains how language models represent words, generate text probabilistically, and are influenced by human feedback and bias. The Brain Island, designed with researchers from IRIT, Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse – Toulouse Institute for Computer Science Research – and CerCo, Centre de Recherche Cerveau et Cognition – Brain and Cognition Research Centre – explores human cognition, attention, information integration, and the differences between human and artificial decision-making.
All activities are assembled into an open-access educational kit including physical materials, validated teaching resources, digital content, and technical files. The resources, in French, are also made available online under a Creative Commons licence to encourage reuse, adaptation, and dissemination: https://sites.google.com/view/archipel-icam
2022/2023 – ICENTRA, Recherche et Société (Research and Society)
The ICENTRA project investigated real-world AI deployments across the Occitanie region. Through field studies and multidisciplinary analysis, the project documented how AI-based technologies interact with existing work practices and organizational structures. These observations provide empirical insight into the gap that can emerge between the intended use of technological systems and their actual appropriation in professional contexts.
2019/2021 – CISC, Readynov Occitanie Region
The CISC Comptoir Intelligent Social Connecté explored the concept of an interactive connected counter for commercial, tourism, and public-service environments. Developed in collaboration with industrial designers and woodworking specialists, including OpteamDesign and Aranda-Mas, the system combined traditional furniture design with tangible and digital interaction.
Physical controls, tangible objects, sensing technologies, and projected digital content enabled users to explore information through the furniture itself rather than through a conventional computer interface. From a technical perspective, the prototype relied on a distributed ROS-based architecture connecting sensor drivers, gesture-recognition components, projection systems, and tracking services. This modular architecture supported asynchronous communication and real-time interaction while facilitating rapid experimentation with different interface configurations.
The prototype was evaluated in user studies involving 75 participants, providing both technical and human-factors insights that contributed to the subsequent development of IRIS Lab’s research on connected furniture and ambient interaction.
