ANR – BIOPRIME – Biomimetic lattice-based architected prosthesis for accurate replication of intervertebral disc multiaxial mechanics
The BIOPRIME project, launched in November 2025 and supported by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) under its Young Researchers program (JCJC), addresses this challenge. With funding of €300,000 over four years, BIOPRIME aims to design a new generation of lumbar prostheses capable of mimicking the structure and mechanical behavior of a healthy intervertebral disc.
Inspired by nature, BIOPRIME leverages innovative internal structures called lattices, manufactured using 3D printing. These geometric micro-cells, precisely shaped and arranged, allow for the recreation of zones with varied mechanical properties: elasticity, stiffness, shock absorption, and resistance to specific loads. The goal is clear: restore near-normal biomechanics, reduce long-term complications, and sustainably improve patients’ quality of life.
BIOPRIME is built on an unprecedented collaboration between scientists, engineers, and neurosurgeons. The project brings together the Laboratoire du Génie Civil et Géo-Environnement (LGCgE) and neurosurgeons from Hôpital Ramsay Santé - Lille, ensuring an integrated approach combining fundamental science, technical innovation, and clinical expertise.
