Elisa, Lille, juin 2010
I decided to apply for Erasmus Programme in the need to experience a new challenge in life and get in contact with a different culture from mine. When I first arrived at the ICAM in Lille, where I had to accomplish a work called “memoire scientifique” based on research for the fulfilment of an industrial project, I felt completely welcomed by the administration and the students which made me feel immediately at home.I could later on experience a different way to face work activities and their difficulties which gave me the possibility to become aware of new ways of solving them. The project managing and the type of work I had to fulfil were very interesting and stimulating and gave me the possibility to discover an area of engineering which was still confused and approximate. I was, furthermore, offered the possibility to face a more professional approach to research by the use of enquiries on products and techniques brought out by specialized enterprises.I enjoyed very much the atmosphere in the department where I worked and the attitude towards work; it was a very enriching experience.
Connor, Nantes, june 2009
Connor Barry, an Irish student from Cork Institute of Technology, spent 3 months in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Icam Nantes, from March to June 2009.
He worked with two French students on an industrial project. The customer asked Icam to design a new crane intended to support a camera used during concerts or other public events. The students had to study the feasibility, the technological choices and the sizing of the mechanical and electrical components of this special machine. Many of its characteristics were new and non-existent on the market of cranes for cameras.
The students started designing the head and went on progressively down to the base of the crane. During his stay, Connor was in charge of designing the axle which supported the main mechanical constraints. He modeled this axle and found the provider for the appropriate steel.
Every step in the project started with a brainstorming. The results and selected solutions were then presented and approved by the customer. Connor integrated very quickly into the team. He also appreciated the permanent relationship with the customer.
